What’s the point?
It can be difficult to keep
your eye on the big picture - why you would want to get improved exam
results.
Your teenage brain is still
developing. For example, your prefrontal cortex actually declines i
n size between
the age of 12 and 20! This is the part of the brain that we use to plan and to
carry out those plans while blocking out distractions.
So it's not your fault!
However, it is what it is. And
everybody else is in the same boat. So it's important to realise that you need
to remind yourself of what's important to you.
Why would you want to get
improved exam results?
OPTIONS!
Research shows us that while
exams aren't the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and
Everything, in actual fact good grades give us more options.
All that nagging,
complaining, cajoling, the bribes, the threats (!) from your parents is them
doing the only things they know to encourage you to do the best you can in your
exams because they want the world for you.
And statistics demonstrate
that career opportunities open up for people with good exam grades.
If you don't believe me, look it up on the Internet. Google: employment
statistics by education and have a look for yourself.
Who wouldn't want to be able
to choose their career?
Who wouldn't want to avoid
being dictated to by someone else's assessment of you?
So maybe you feel a
resistance to knuckling down. Some people automatically react badly to being
told what to do. But the problem is there's no freedom in that, because they
are compelled to do the opposite of what's good for them.
So maybe it's time to decide
for yourself what you want, and why you want it. And to do what it takes to
achieve that. Not for someone else, but for yourself.
