I can do it, so why can’t he?

I can do it, so why can’t he?

My lovely husband has a fantastic auditory memory so he easily remembers what he hears.

That explains the continual stream of Shakespeare quotes, Edward Lear poetry, the lyrics of any song he’s ever heard and the entire repertoire of Monty Python.

Maybe you know someone like that?

Me, on the other hand – I don’t even listen to lyrics! I’m also an auditory person but I listen to the base line and harmonic structure. Having done this for as long as I can remember, I can reproduce all but the most complicated music on the piano after one or two listenings.

Neat trick if I say so myself!

But I have no idea of, nor any interest in the lyrics. This also explains why, though I’m good at writing music, I’m rubbish at the words! Unless you consider, “Yeah, yeah, baby, yeah” inspired! (Anyway -that’s how most pop songs go, isn’t it?)

Isn’t it interesting how each of us has different talents according to the different ways we process information?

So, back to Nige - and I must point out – he’s an intelligent bloke. Sometimes I have to remind myself! Because - while he’s great at remembering what he’s heard, he can’t follow auditory instructions for a toffee!

You can send him off to get something from the kitchen and he’s halfway up the stairs to the bedroom before you realise he’s done it again!

And it seems so weird - I can do it, so why can’t he?

Isn’t it true, that we expect other people to be the same as us? And isn’t it true that we can be short-tempered with other people when they don’t seem to ‘get’ something that’s easy for us to understand?

Who do you know who struggles with something that you could do as easily as falling off a log?

Lysette - this makes so much sense and explains why I'm so bad at telling jokes! I don't listen to the detail. I'm also no good at remembering verbal instructions, but give me a visual map and I'm fine!
What's in a title?
Seems I misunderstood what 'Title' meant! And I thought it was my title... just goes to show how we can misinterpret words - now there's another topic!
I knew it was not me!
Thank you Lysette - all this time I thought it was me - I must get Kirsty to read this post! Nice blog by the way!
Good thing we're not all the same.....
or the world would be a duller place. Why spend too much time combating your weaknesses when you can be so much more helpful to others by focussing on your strengths?
Is some of this Men vs Women?
I can cook the children's dinner, manage my emails and write a shopping list all at the same time, my husband can't do any even in isolation...he can however recall the date and time of any important sporting fixture over the next year. Is this just in my house?!
Kick my bad self
I've always thought that I'm accepting of other people and their differences but now I think about it, probably not enough. Reminds me of a lyric to a song called The Questions (see what I did there?)"How have you got high expectations but yet you've got low patience?" P.S. I like the way you demonstrated your point through a real life situation. That suits my way of learning I think. Thanks
It's poignant to the individual
The reason why Nigel remembers the things that he does is because they are important to him, whereas the item from the kitchen wasn't. I can remember birthdays because they're important to me, and my husband always knows which way is tightening and loosening a screw!
